Comment on Zizek! First as Tragedy, Then as Farce by Allen http://peter-brannan.com/weblog2010/2010/11/28/zizek-first-as-tragedy-then-as-farce/comment-page-1/#comment-279 Allen Thu, 02 Dec 2010 22:32:24 +0000 http://peter-brannan.com/weblog2010/?p=342#comment-279 My favorite part: "It is immoral to use private property to alleviate the horrible evils that result from the institution of private property" What he says about the worst slave owners being those slave owners who were kind to their slaves, because they prevented those who suffered from realizing that their oppression was a core part of the system...too accurate! He talks a lot about this current economic depression being the precipitation of the end of global capitalism (being it's inevitable outcome, and stopping point). But it makes me nervous that what he says about the kindness of capitalists toward the working poor resulting in the working poor's ignorance of the system's evils (or perhaps more accurately thier hesitance in the face of those evils to feel morally constrained to stay oppressed) is more and more what you see as a result of the economic depression. Capitalists no longer seem to need to put that much work into this "charity" - the poor are just disposed to think to themselves "yeah, I'm being exploited, but I'm just really thankful that in this economic crisis I have a job" It's like the possibility of loss is so real in light of the depression that the poor just blind themselves to the evils. I really want to see him speak the next time he's in Portland. I think you have such a great idea with this project. Next up, you should take pictures of people's zippers that are open and juxtapose them with this project. You could call it "what's wrong with this picture?" because the businesses are supposed to be open and the people's zippers are supposed to be close! Get it?! oh, man. good times. these are looking really great. I think you have such a great idea with this project.
